Douglas Polk is against low buy-in events at the WSOP

Douglas Polk 2019What is the limit for a low buy-in at the WSOP series? Douglas Polk believes that the current entrance fee for some tournaments is too low.

The anniversary World Series of Poker is ongoing. One of the first events is the BIG 50 tournament, in which more than 28 000 entries were made. This is an absolute record in the history of live poker. Players are fighting for their part of the prize pool of $13 509 435.

Does the Big50 have a low buy-in?

This event is a great success for the WSOP, but not everybody likes its low buy-in. Doug Polk expressed his dissatisfaction regarding this subject on his Twitter page:

Later, Polk added that he is not against tournaments with low buy-ins and realizes that not everyone can afford several thousand dollars for the game. However, he meant that the WSOP should not focus on tournaments in which so many people take part. There must be a certain limit, and a $1K fee to enter the World Series tournament is more than appropriate.

Public’s reaction

Douglas' comments have caused a huge resonance in the poker community. DJ MacKinnon believes that several low buy-in tournaments do not have a negative impact on the festival. Matt Berkey strongly criticized the former professional, having written that events like BIG 50 are used to promote poker.

«Come on with this take. We spend 11 months of the year talking about how difficult the landscape has become and how we need methods of bringing new money into the game. WSOP obliges and you scrutinize what? The service? Can't wait for Take 2: Why the main should be a $100k buy-in», - Berkey wrote.

However, there were people who agreed with Polk. Main Event finalist Joseph Cheong thinks that low buy-in tournaments are the prerogative of other casinos, and the entrance fee means a certain prestige:

«The game is already growing. A lot of casinos offer lower price for massive fields. Imagine if half of the WPT mains became $500 - $1 000 just to get more entries. It means a lot less to be a champ even if technically harder to win».

Opinion poll from Doug Polk

Douglas Polk decided to check the preferences of the players by making a poll. He made the corresponding post on Twitter:

Most people and this is 37%, believe that low buy-in events are enough at the WSOP. However, 34% would like to reduce this figure.

Next year's WSOP may take place in the Caesars Forum, a large conference center located in the very heart of Las Vegas. In this way, the problem of holding large tournaments with low entry fees may be solved.
