Top themes of 2019: WSOP 2019 highlights
Every year, there are special dates on the poker calendar. One of such dates is devoted to the World Series of Poker (WSOP), the festival that attracts poker players from all over the world.
Tens of millions of dollars are played out in the tournaments, and anyone can become a winner. This year, the WSOP took place for the 50th time.
The champion of the Main Event WSOP 2019
Hossein Ensan was able to take down the WSOP Main Event 2019. For the victory, the poker player received as much as $10 000 000, and this winning became the largest one in his career.
Hossein himself was overwhelmed that he had managed to beat the field of 8 569 players:
«This is the best feeling in my life. Unbelievable! I am so happy I’m here with the bracelet in hand».
The guy also added that winning the WSOP Main Event 2019 was the best feeling that had happened to him. His opponent (Dario Sammartino) fought well, but he didn’t get really good cards. Ensan believes that his victory was not without luck, but he worked hard to achieve the bracelet for a very long time.
WSOP 2019: basic statistics
- The Main Event became the second largest one during the 50 years of the existence of the series. The biggest tournament happened to be held in 2006, back then the event collected 8 773 entries.
- The $500 Big Fifty Tournament has become the largest WSOP event ever, since 28 731 players took part in it, and this caused kilometer-long queues in the hall.
- There were 187 298 entries made (in total) during the WSOP 2019 tournaments.
- There were also 89 bracelets and $290 000 000 of prize money raffled at the WSOP 2019.
- Poker players from 22 countries took part in the series. Americans got the most number of victories: they won 52 trophies.
Negreanu became the WSOP Player of the Year… by mistake
In 2019, the race for the WSOP Player of the Year title broke out in real earnest. The leaders were constantly changing, but the main contenders for the title were Shaun Deeb and Daniel Negreanu.
Following the scoring, Daniel Negreanu was declared the winner. However, the Canadian didn’t rejoice for a long, as it turned out later that the WSOP had made a mistake in the calculations.
Negreanu was accidentally credited with 213 points for reaching the ITM zone of the online event of the World Series of Poker (Event # 68 $1 000 Online No Limit Hold’em Championship), although in fact, the poker player didn’t get in the money in this very tournament.
This mistake was noticed by Russian poker journalist Alexander "iskander" Jelenski. The guy noted an inaccuracy in the calculations back in July, but he thought that it would be corrected later.
The WSOP organizers apologized to the players and declared Robert Campbell the winner. The Australian’s results at the WSOP 2019 are impressive: he managed to 13 cashes in the bracelet events. It’s worth noting that Robert played at the final table 6 times and twice became the champion.
